87. We’re Cruisers

I’m back from a road trip on the South Island. Together with my cruising buddies from Samahdi and Traveller. The South Island is probably the highlight of any New Zealand visit and it more than lived up to my expectations. I managed to tick off four of the five items on my list of things to see (fjords, glaciers, vineyards, penguins and albatross). My main takeaway though was probably to just watch the ever changing landscape through the windows of the car. Which is good as driving in New Zealand takes a long time. The roads are narrow and windy and you find yourself stopping all the time to document another part of the spectacular scenery. With time we found ourselves overwhelmed to the extent that we just took it for granted and resorted to playing all sort of games to pass the time between our destinations. One of our favourites was something we just called ‘We’re cruisers’…

We’re cruisers, we don’t shop we provision
We’re cruisers, we sleep when we sail
We’re cruisers, we don’t race unless we’re winning
We’re cruisers, we sneak our trash into yours
We’re cruisers, we say we rough it but we have eight ways to make coffee and Belgian waffles
We’re cruisers, we can’t smell ourselves and don’t care if you can
We’re cruisers, we sail one percent of the time
We’re cruisers, we invite ourselves
We’re cruisers, we poop where you swim
We’re cruisers, we say we’re global citizens but we make fun of others
We’re cruisers, we consider ourselves to be locals whether you do or not
We’re cruisers, we think we’re part of the local community but often don’t contribute to it
We’re cruisers, we make clean water and pee in yours
We’re cruisers, we appropriate when we feel it’s appropriate
We’re cruisers, we don’t care if it’s not five o’clock yet

Steef and Lizzy from Samahdi. Swimming in a mountain lake off Mount Cook. Spot the ice in the background. Mike and Jeb also swam. I bottled out
Mike and Daisy from Traveller, Daisy’s sister Sadie and Crocodile Dundee
Earthquake museum in Christchurch
International Antarctic Centre. Scott left from Christchurch for his fatal expedition to the South Pole

  4. Thanks James. So cool to hear from you. Yep, in your ‘hood now. I’m going to Fiji and Vanuatu first. Then probably straight to Indonesia for the next cyclone season. Not sure if I’ll come to Australia. Maybe if I need some serious boat work but I’m having most of it done here. All the best. Tom
